How the independent tests worked

Our aim was to find out how many aerosols were generated by Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers compared to drying with paper towels or washing but not drying.

Independent testing was carried out by Airmid Healthgroup in a controlled environment using Dyson Airblade W+D, dB, V and 9 kJ sinks, paper towels and hand dryers. Each experiment was performed in triplicate, using paper towels and hand dryers in separate experiments.

The results showed that each Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer had no significant impact on ambient air. This supports previous studies that they are as hygienic as paper towels.

What independent tests have shown

Dyson further analyzed the results of this work and wrote a paper that was peer-reviewed and published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health. The study concluded that drying hands using jet hand dryers did not significantly increase the amount of aerosols or bacteria in the air compared to walking and washing hands or drying hands with paper towels. What is aerosolization?

Aerosolization is the action that creates aerosols. Aerosols are small liquid or solid particles or their mixtures suspended in a gas (e.g. air).

Their composition may vary depending on how they are formed and may include bacteria or viruses. Aerosols can vary in size, for example they can be as small as 0.3 microns.

While larger, heavier particles tend to fall to the floor, these smaller particles are likely to be suspended in the air - or "aerosolized". Aerosols are all around us.

Contactless technology

Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers use sensor technology. Designed for a touchless and hygienic user environment.

These sensors are programmed to detect and automatically dry hands. This allows users to maintain a distance between their hands and the machine.

Dyson's new independent research into aerosolization shows that hand drying with the Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer does not create more aerosol than drying with paper towels - and that Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers are hygienic and safe.1

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. To be a genuine HEPA filter, which is standard on all Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers, the filter must meet the EN1822-5 and IEST-RP-CC001.6 test standards. Any filter that does not state that it is a HEPA filter may not prove to be as effective.

Hand washing is an essential way to limit the spread of bacteria and viruses. Proper hand drying is an important step in this process, as wet hands can spread up to 1,000 times more bacteria than dry hands.8 Dyson Airblade hand dryers have proven to be as hygienic as paper towels when drying hands, 9 but without the environmental damage or high cost of use.10
